But that’s not the point of buying it. Setup is pretty easy and does require an Apple or android mobile device. All configuration is done via the app, including joining it to you home WiFi.

If you would like to just your your smart phone or tablet to control the plug then there is only one configuration step, setup the Kasa app (setup a login and password is required) on your device by adding the smart plug to the app's list. Then you can turn on/off using your device from anywhere. If you want to use Amazon Echo as well then Alexa.amazon.com (or the Alexa app on your smart phone) will need to add the Kasa Skill and then add the smart plug (use the Kasa login and password to link the plug to Alexa). Then just ask Alexa to turn on or off the smart plus by whatever name you assigned to the smart plug. I called mine Plug 1 (mostly because it will not be dedicated to just one use) so all I say is: Alexa, turn on Plug 1.

To use it to control stuff with your voice (Alexa, although Hey Google probably works too) you need the application and a Wi-Fi network. I am great with Windows; Android not so much, and even I worked it out.

You definitely need WiFi at home for it to work remotely or if not only will work manual with a button that comes on the side for on and off.
