“I mainly need this to record conversations and some video inside. Is the audio recording clear? Does the camera have to be near to the subject speaking in order for good sound quality?”

The camera needs to be within 25-30ft to hear a normal conversation. If you're doing this for legal purposes be certain you're not in a state that you need to declare you're recording audio/video.
