Hi Tim, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity is needed for setup and management of the cameras via the Tapo app. However, once setup, if Wi-Fi connectivity is temporarily lost, the cameras can still record events locally to an installed microSD card (sold separately). For a full-featured experience, we recommend ensuring the cameras maintain network connectivity.
