If it's 100% metal (no gaps), you might have a Faraday cage situation, so you would probably need to use a wired connection from home to garage and put the extender in Access Point mode. If you have a friend with a comparable unit that you can borrow, it would help determine your situation.

Depending on the existing signal provided by your router (the extender must be installed in a location where it receives adequate signal from your router), the position of the extender, and the layout of your home, it may be able to potentially help extend the signal to the desired location. That being said, metal will severely degrade the Wi-Fi signal, so your results may vary.
