It depends on the phone. The simplest way is to save as many contacts as possible to the SIM card, and then put that SIM card in the new phone. This works even if you don't keep the same SIM when you upgrade, because you can do this just to get the contacts copied. Another way is to send the contacts as a Multimedia Message, either to your email or to another phone number. If it sends them all as separate messages, though, you could use up a lot of messages just transferring them. This also might take as long as copying them by hand, especially if you have to select each stored number on the flip phone.
