Yes, you can use the phone for one month because you can pay month-by-month. Check out tracfone website to see costs. But I don't suggest getting this phone unless the person wants NOTHING MORE than the ability to dial a number and speak to someone on the other side. Otherwise, get the BLU smart phone. You can access internet (maps, directions, and all the other things a visitor might want or need). Or bring along (or borrow) an older unlocked phone and pick up a SIM card
