• Depending on the size of the bread, I would say 1 to 2 to keep it within the boundary of the plate.

• I'm not sure if my answer will help you because I've only used the griddle side so far. I can comfortably fit 6 good size pancakes on it so I would imagine you could fit at least 3 regular size sandwiches on the grill side (obviously 6 slices of bread). I love it so far. Best of luck to you.
