The Laser Beam on your Disc Player/RECORDER first burns the first layer, and then it does a second pass automatically burning a second layer, for a total of almost Double Data Capacity.
Good for saving more Data (Digital Information). Original DVD Movies are recorded on DVD DL (Dual Layer) because it has more capacity to record the Movie, Audio languages, Subtitles, and Bonus Features; and sometimes Enhanced Data for Computer DVD Players (Enhanced Data features like software, etc, that are available only on a computer like PC or Apple, etc, not on TV DVD Players). You can burn on Disc your own non-copyrighted Movies, or Back-Up your Movies for your own personal use, if you have software that decrypts the protection.
