• Yes, Palm work well when you turn off the paired phone. Because , technically, you have one connected device-(palm phone) line with verizon.

• Yes, it works independantly from the paired phone. I take it with me when I need just a phone and leave my large phone at home. Battery life sucks if you are going to be on it alot though.
