“My phone service is off until next Saturday. will I be able to pop this in - use it and then put the old one back in once I pay my bill without a bunch of issues? Also how much on top of the 9.95 card do I have to pay for service?”

The Verizon Rep told me I should never have to pay for a SIM card. They gave me a free one and Helped me set up the service. I returned the unopened SIM to Best Buy for credit.
