The monitor needs AC power if the device connects by Mini HDMI (you need a USB-C power supply, one is not included. Laptop chargers should be suitable). If the device connects to your computer by USB-C AND the USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, then only one cable is needed from your laptop to the display. Bear in mind that powering the display off your laptop can reduce battery runtime, so keep your AC adapter handy.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It works with the USB power, but if your computer hibernate or is turn off, the monitor loses all the settings and next time you turn it on, it will be again in the original factory settings. To avoid that you can plug it to the smartphone charger, and it will work like any other monitor. For HDMI connection you do need an external power supply. And must add that is a very good quality piece of hardware.
