You don't have to connect optical if you are using arc. Yes you can connect a DVD player to the sound bar. I chose not to because it wasn't playing in Atmos just Dolby digital. I ran thru the tv and it now plays as Atmos. Could be the 4k Blu Ray player not sure. I have the sub woofer 15 feet away and it works fine.
