You have the Front main speaker. Then You have the Sub woofer for the base and the 2 back speakers. The 2 back speakers are connected to the sub woofer in the back of the room. The front main speaker is to be installed either above or below the TV. 5.1 means- 2 back 2 front and one center... the .1 is the sub. The front main speaker handles the 2 front and the center in one unit. Hope this helps. The more channels the better. Better separation of sound makes is sound more real!!!
