“Does the system work without the two rear speakers plugged into the wireless sub? I was considering buying this system but was thinking about my current home theater set up and didn't know if I have the space to utilize the two rear surround speakers. I was wondering if the system functioned as a 3.1 if you didn't use the two rear surrounds? I like this system over the 2.1 but might not use the rears at first. Can anyone help me with this question.”

You can turn the satellite speakers on and off to make it a 3.1 or a 5.1 your choice

But, there is not an option in the menu settings that I see for 3.1 so to say weither or not when the system is receiving 5.1 audio input and acknowledges the rear speakers are not hooked up and directs the sound elsewhere (3.1) is unknown to me. But it's really up to the audio input format you use from your audio source. Hope you understand this and helps you out. If it call Vizio customer service they are very helpful

Not sure if it is 3.1 without them, but the 5.1 sound that this bar produces is très magnifique. Hope that helps.
