Game mode allows a faster refresh rate to minimize input lag from console or pc. I have older consoles connected to 'upscalers' and connected via hdmi. Game mode just prevents the lag I stated earlier. If game mode is not on while gaming, a press of a button on a controller will have a significant delay. My Vizio autodetected a gaming console and pc and turned it on for me but it's a good idea to check anyway.
