• Use either basic remote or tablet. I don't use the basic remote at all.

• Yes; everything can be operated from the tablet. The basic remote is for us old folks who'd rather grab something with buttons for quick sound changes. ;)

• You can use the tablet remote. There is a vizio app on the remote where you can do all the tv controls.

• My Vizio display can be turned on either by basic remote or tablet. Dowloading Smartcast app to your phone or other tablet allows it to also control your display. Sometimes I will use the basic remote to turn on/turn off display or change HDMI inputs because it's faster than the menus on tablet (1 push instead of 2 or 3).
