Can you not control everything with the remote? null

No you can not. You have to have a smart phone to get to setting.

Its better with the app, with the remote you are limited to do some things like setting the colors and stuff.

The remote is awesome. It allows you to do so much and even have a built in. Keyboard so that you don't have race through letters on the screen. There is also an application that you can load on your smart phone and operate it from there too.
