Honestly, the sound on it wasn't that loud, a sound bar would definitely be worth it.

I think the sound is not very good on its own. I use a receiver and external speakers.

They REALLY try to sell you on the sound bar when you buy this but I opted not to purchase one and I am pleased with the sound quality. I live in a two story house and this tv is in our family room in the back of the house and when my husband is watching sports I can hear this TV in the master bedroom which is upstairs but near front of the house. I think it's just fine on its own.
