They comes with there own adapters so you can use all the times but you can use simple normal batteries if you walking around but if unit plug in you don't have to use batteries

Brooke - The VTech DM111 uses AAA alkaline batteries. This is an AC powered baby monitor. The unit when running on batteries, will only operate for a short time. The batteries are for back-up use and it does not recharge when the parent unit is plugged in. We recommend to have the parent unit plugged in at all times for continuous monitoring.
