• I don’t think you need both to be plugged in.

• Hi - Yes, you have the option of connecting just the main base of the VTech CS5119-2. If you want to use the 2nd handset, make sure that the base is still working as the handsets gets reception from the base. Thank you for your interest! ~VTech Support
