• Both the base and the cordless base have to be plugged into an electrical outlet if you want to use the answering machine and caller id, but the main base with the cord will work without power,

• The whole system must be plugged into a power outlet to work. Each unit also plug in to the outlet for power to recharge. Each phone unit uses batteries for the light up functions of the phone itself.
