This produces 4400 BTUs, and can heat an area of up to 400 sq. ft. The glass itself doesn't get hot, but can get warm, and has a safety mechanism which shuts off if it overheats. This insert doesn't have a thermostat, but it does have a blower.

Hi K, Wonderful questions. The fireplace insert is 4400 BTUs, heats a room up to 400 sq. ft. the glass does not get hot, but where heat comes out of can get warm, If the insert ever does become too hot, there is a safety mechanism where it will actually shut off. There is no thermostat, and the blows out heat. I hope this helps you in buying!
