“I have a Gateway DX4822-01 running Win 7, a purchased copy of Win 10 on a USB drive. I would like to install the wd- blue internally, install Win 10 to it, and move user files to the Win 10 drive at my leisure. Does this sound like a plan? Any pitfalls?”

Different ways to do what You want done. I would go ahead and upgrade Your windows 7 to windows 10 first (keeping Your files). Then clone the old hard drive to the new wd-blue . After the cloning install the wd-blue. That way You have the older hard drive You pull out as a complete backup with windows 10 and all Your files on it.
