• Yes the hard drive is preformated. Further there was included a program to backup my main drive.

• no you have to format the hard drive only an original hard drive might come format ready

• They are exposed for illustration purposes only. They do not come formatted. Look on youtube on how to format and install properly. WD does not know if you are going to use it in an apple or a windows computer so they leave it up to you. Better yet read the instructions. that come with it. If you do a clean install of windows it will format it for you.

• The drive is not formatted. The circuit board is exposed so do not touch it. Static can easley ruin the drive.
