Has to do with how manufacturers display their size vs format size. These are helium filled drives and the tracks are written closer causing some space to be lost for bad sector reservation.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.A terabyte has a storage drive capacity of about 1 trillion bytes. But more specifically, 1,099,511,627,776 bytes; 1,073,741,824 kilobytes; or 1,048,576 megabytes. My installed capacity shows as 14.000.517.541.888 bytes. Dividing this number by the number of bytes in a terabyte equals 12.73339652642608, or a smidge over 12.73, So, what is advertised appears to be the number of bytes in the storage unit, not the number of terabytes in the storage unit. My NFTS file system shows the capacity to be 12.72 TB

In either case, a drive's capacity is measured by using the total number of bytes available on the drive. As long as the drive displays the correct number of bytes (approximate), you are getting the drive's full capacity. Please follow the below link to know more: “Drive displays a smaller capacity than the indicated size on the drive label”:https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16656 For more info on the drive, refer to the link: http://products.wdc.com/library/AAG/ENG/4078-705144.pdf -Need Help?
