Yes they work, currently have 2 in my Synology DS1817+. Drives inside are WD140EDFZ-11A0VA0.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes - I've got 3 of them shucked so far. All were WD140EDFZ - these are CMR not SMR so no worries there. They work just fine in my Synology running Plex.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I personally haven't, but if you Google the question, you will find that many have done both, and there are reports of finding both White and Red Label drives inside.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Drive model WD140EDFZ is a white-label, 14 TB version of the Ultrastar DC HC550. I say this b/c is shares the same Regulation Number, which means they are the same device (US7SAR180). The DC HC550 is a data-center grade hard drive. It's good. When WD sells these drives at retail, they come with a 5-year warranty. However, most likely the drives inside these EasyStore devices are B-grade versions of the HC550, at best (though a consumer is still very likely to get years of good value out of shucking one of these, or using it as-is with the enclosure as intended). The same is also true if you happen to shuck one of these drives and discover it is WD White with model WD140EMFZ. The latter are actually Ultrastar He14's (aka Ultrastar DC HC530). Another enterprise-grade product (and again, these EasyStore drives share identical regulation numbers, which means they are in fact identical to the enterprise drives). Don't believe me? Take a look at the R/N visible in the attached photograph of a WD140EMFZ. It is US7SAR180. Next, go and look-up the product manual for the Ultrastar He14, and locate the page with its R/N. Or, you can take my word for it coming from someone who has been playing around with hard drive storage since it has existed. :-)
