Can you run it directly through a phone null

Yes, this can be connected to some smart phones with the proper cable.

The person who answered suggesting it's not recommended failed to understand the question. yes it will work.

This hard drive is not intended to be used on a phone and I would not try it. Although you could find the right adaptors to connect it to a phone, the hard drive requires power to for the internal spinning disk hard drive and even if you phone was able to put out the power it needs(unlikely) it would be draining your battery really fast which could result in damage. I would recommend a flash drive instead.
