This is indeed a plug & play HDD but it cannot run on just power through a USB port. It requires its own power source and the HDD comes with its power adapter so you don't have to worry about buying one.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.If you want a USB powered WD hard drive then look at the MyPassport drives. I believe their maximum capacity is 5 TBs before formatting to your Operating System. Top speed is USB 3.0 (4,800 Megabits per second / 480 MegaBytes per second). Some other versions may have the newer USB 3.x Type-C connector but the hard drive itself spins at 5,400 RPM and may not be able to achieve a faster data transfer than the USB 3.0 spec. I have one as a backup drive. Super handy to have. I haven't had any trouble with it transferring large files to either my laptop or small form factor mini-PC. Both of those use similarly spec'd hard drives. FunFractals

Please try again later.Hints that scream it isn't powered through the USB connection: 1) description refers to it thusly: "This WD easystore desktop hard drive" 2) among the items in the "what's included" list is: AC adapter 3) the physical dimensions L x W x H = 5.48" x 1.93" x 6.72" well, Best Buy includes only two of those dimensions Best Buy idiotically lists the weight as 2.04 ounces when it's actually 2.04 pounds. But anyone with commonsense should recognize that a mere 2 oz. is incorrect.
