IF you buy and own a WD product, is there software and updates you have to purchase from WD in the future to continue to use the product? Or another way, if you don't purchase update software, the unit becomes unusable? Please advise. null

I bought the WD easystore 2tb - it does come with WD Discovery software for WD backup and WD Drive Utilities. I just deleted the software and use my WD as a 'HUGE' Thumbdrive. It works fine.. and very fast! No problems with my Chromebook or Windows 10 Laptop.

No. This is a portable hard disk and you can use it with no dependency on WD.
