It can be used to download digital music to iTunes but it is not a CD or CD reader.

Assuming your computer boots and recognizes the CD, you can rip your CDs directly to this drive and then have iTunes reference this location to listen to music. There are better resolutions, but it will work. Then if your hard drive completely fails you will still have your music on this drive.

You'll have to mount it on your system and direct iTunes to use it for its media library, or create a (hard) link in your iTunes directory to the external unit. Your question didn't indicate if your system is MacOS or Windows. If MacOS, you'll probably want to reformat/repartition it from FAT to an Apple-optimized format before you start using it.
