“I am backing up all my documents from my windows 10 computer.. mostly office documents along with pdf files. I purchased a mac and would like to know if I can still access my files from this backup with out reformatting?”

If you are formatted in ExtFat and just copied the files, it'll be no problem. It will be iffy if you used NTFS. I believe the drive is EXTFat32 out of the box which will bounce between the 2 OSes easily.
