It might be that the default drive formatting is incopatible with your OS. I would suggest re-formatting the drive.

Usually this is a plug and play device, there really shouldn't be any installation (like a USB thumb drive, just plug it in and start using). I would see what other data is on there, it doesn't seem typical to me. I would first see what's taking up all the space (if its brand new..) .. otherwise I would take it back or try reformatting the hard drive to a different partition type. That's usually the case when you're trying to use them with MacBooks. A quick google search should be able to help you. Good luck
