Hey, ChuckLouis. Yes the portable hdd can be used as a standard secondary drive remaining attached to your computer until you feel the need to remove it (safely, of course). I use mine to store my massive music collection which is streamed to my Bluetooth devices while at home. I only remove it from my main computer when I am transporting my music collection with me to enjoy on my laptop away from home.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I leave mine plugged in for loading photos all the time and I have never had trouble doing that. I can plug and unplug it if I need photos from another hard drive and have never had any issues.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. For me the best answer relates to USB port availability. If you can use a port, and keep the external plugged-in, I believe that keeping the external drive connected is just easier, and not more stressful on the drive. The othe option is to use a powered USB strip, that allows more flexibility, and better results. If you bought the drive to store music chances are you acces the drive frequently. The same applies to video. For pictures, the best answer may be occasional use. Just my opinion.
