“does this require anything special like software or drivers? I want to use forever to store pictures and video. I have an older external hard drive that I can't even acces anything on it now because its outdated or not compatible with my new laptop.”

Nothing special is needed. I use one of these drives as my picture and video vault. When I want to move some files from my main computer for storage, I just plug the drive into an empty port and copy the file to the hard drive for storage. Works like a charm.
