Yes, that’s how I currently use mine. You cannot store PS5 games on it though, you can only store PS4 games on it

However, what you can actually do with an external hard drive on a PS5 will be different from how it worked on PS4. You can't play PS5 games from the drive, from what I can tell, but PS4 games should work, though. But Sony might change their firmware later on (I'm writing this answers in March 2021).
