You have to have a host computer, it doesn’t have a processor. You can set it to back up via iTunes. You can also set up your os computer to backup. Extra space for multiple backups!

You can backup you hard drive and your apps from iTunes (sync) as a function of you hard drive backup, but directly to the drive is a no. If you are really into data security, the imaging your drive daily and progressive backup would work. When you restore it would restore your last image (i.e. all data on your computer at time of back up). Apple really prefers you using iCloud.
