• wouldn't be detrimental since drives in PCs are mounted that way, only issue would be making sure it's properly ventilated

• I lay the drive horizontally all the time. It does not make a difference. Its safer for me, in case someone bumps my desk.

• Either way will be fine as there is quite a lot helping the hard drive stay in place you do not have to worry about degradation.

• To the best of my knowledge, it doesn't matter WHAT orientation these drives operate at, but to be totally sure you would have to contact the manufacturer.
