It's plug n play. You can keep all of your photos or whatever files you want on the external hard drive, and simply plug it in to whatever computer you're going to use to access the files. The best way to use it in this manner is to backup your files through "Copy and Paste" as opposed to an actual "Backup and Restore" procedure which compresses the files and have to be "Restored" before they can be used.
