No, and it would prolong the life of the internal components if you power down the device when not accessing the stored data.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.In my opinion you do not HAVE to keep the external drive plugged in when not in use. My question to you would be, Why not? When not in use it draws very little power and will be available for use without having to plug it back in. If your concern is data loss, this does not happen normally. I have had several external hard drives that I store photos and documents stored in a safe deposit box. If your concern is security, your antivirus software should protect you from a data breach.
