This is primarily used as a local device. Through advanced networking it's possible to connect to remotely such as setting up a VPN. If you're looking for a device that's easily accessible remotely I'd go with the WD My Cloud. I have both devices and have setup an incremental backup with the two units and they work easily together.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can use access this remotely for sure. The simplest way would probably be ftp, but there are many other options. This drive won't be setup up for the WD mobile app and cloud software, like the My Cloud devices the previous responder mentioned, but nonetheless it can absolutely be accessed remotely.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, if you take the drive with you ... But I think you are thinking of a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive. And for that one, I'd suggest something like the WD My Cloud (for example: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-my-cloud-6tb-external-hard-drive-nas-white/8305003.p?skuId=8305003 - also sold at Best Buy). I have one and I can access the files on it from within my home network or outside my home network (with the drive at my house) by going to mycloud.com and signing in. But this is a USB drive.
I would recommend:
