Looks like WD changes them depending on whatever excess inventory they have on hand of different drives. Basically, these external HDDs are good ways for HDD manufacturers to decrease inventory supplies. Seems crazy, but these drives aren't for designed for the rigors of internal use (e.g. fast read/write, fast platter spin) so the average consumer isn't going to notice the performance difference in back-up only applications.
