“Can I use this with JUST an external hard drive (IE. without any internal drives)? I have large external drives that I'd connect to the USB ports. I'd prefer not to buy any more internal drives though if I don't have to. Thanks!”

NO! You need the internal drives for the hub to work
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There are no drives in this unit so no it will not work until you install a drive in your WD My Cloud. Best if you install 2 of the same size drives so the raid works protecting your information. Note you will only be able to see one drive since the 2nd drive mirrors the 1st drive
