“Is it possible to use this as an Apple Time Machine Backup by connecting directly to an iMac rather than to a router? If using it only as an Apple Time Machine backup, does it still need to be connected to the Internet?”

It will not connect directly to your Mac, and must be connected to a router. Even connected via ethernet, MacOS at least does not recognize the drive. You must connect it to a router (or possibly a splitter but I haven't tried that). Once you do that though, it will be recognized by Time Machine as a backup disk.
