I've been running a Samsung Portable SSD T7 as a external destination drive for my Time Machine backups for the last few years with no issues. It is supported on Apple MacOS X 10.10.x or later so should workouts fine for your application. Samsung also has a T5 version of this drive supporting MacOS X 10.9 or above. The transfer rates are slower but it is also at a lower price point.
