• Not in Windows. Just plug it in and Windows will detect it and show it as a drive in Windows Explorer.

• No, your laptop should recognize it shortly after you plug it in to the USB jack. It will appear in your files folder as "My Passport" and you can easily transfer files or folders there for storage.
