Yes you can and the MAC should recognize it and link to your Time Machine app. That's all I had to do and I'm nowhere near technologically inclined.

As long as your Mac has the older USB type A port, yes. If you have a newer Macbook then you will need an additional adapter to go from USB-A to the MacBook’s USB type C ports.
