“I bought this for use with MacBook Pro and Catalina. It was advertised as plug and play, Do I have to activate the WD software I see on the drive in order to use it as a time machine backup? I would rather not have to add anything more to my computer.”

You do not have to activate the WD software to use it as a Time Machine storage. In fact, I would recommend not activating the WD app as it will not be used, but often inserts itself on boot-up.
