• Heating ? No, its just an external hard drive, not a heater... As for how long it might last, that depends upon if you treat it like crap, drop it and so on. Ive had 5 of them for the past 5 years without issues.

• Yes it heats up but no frying eggs on it. I just laid it down horizontally and placed on 4 little rubber feet 1 inch high behind my Xbox for proper cooling and no issues for 9 months now. Works flawlessly.
