“I plan on using this TV with an antenna. If I wanted to go to channel 36, do I have to enter 36-1? If I enter 36, will it default to 36-1? I find it very annoying to have to enter the "-1" to get to a channel.”

If you put in 36, it would go to 36-1. If you have a 36-2, 36-3, etc. it will still go to 36-1 when you put in just 36.
