To answer the second part first, what cable you require to hook up a DVD player is completely up to the extra device itself. Some have HDMI, RCA, and/or coaxial cable outputs so pay attention to that when shopping for one. I will say that most products now use HDMI as it is the better choice and current standard in most instances. As for your first question, nearly all extra media devices, such as DVD, BLU-RAY, DVR, converter boxes, and gaming consoles, now use HDMI as the output connection cable. It is the current cable standard for HD content. Currently there are many cables on the market and they vary mostly by the materials used to make them and the actual speed they transfer the digital content. Higher quality materials, such as gold, obviously create a better connection and result in lesser signal noise between your device and your TV. The higher transfer speeds are necessary for the larger amount of information they must send for the higher resolution TV's like the 4k and 8k models. The high-speed cables are usually designated by their "4k" or "Ultra 4k" labeling. Since this TV is an older model that only goes up to 1080p then any basic HDMI cable currently on the market will work just fine. Just keep in mind a 4k BLU-RAY player will not work in 4k on this TV or with a basic non-4k cable if you decided to purchase one later. Length comes in to play as well if you need anything over 10 feet, but most people wouldn't require that.
